Interview about skincare best practices with expert Olga Lorencin

Skincare during COVID-19 is a new venture entirely. Many of us who have become accustomed to visiting our esthetician regularly for glowing skin are now experimenting with taking matters into our own hands. Though most of us can no longer see skin care professionals right now, we can glean some wisdom from afar, evidenced with Halle’s virtual facial with skincare expert Olga Lorencin. The learning doesn’t end there. Halle opted to have a follow-up conversation with Olga about skincare best practices, DIY facials, and teaching our children how to care for their skin early on. Dive into the world of at-home skincare below.

 

Since COVID, at-home skin care practices have become increasingly common. What are your tips for those who are taking control of their skin care?

This is a good time to take a closer look of what products can really make the biggest impact on the overall health and look of your skin. Stick to products that provide gentle but meaningful exfoliation and don’t forget hydration. Also, if you have an opportunity to have a professional dermatologist or esthetician create a protocol from cleanser to sunblock, even better. Many places are offering virtual consultation at a fraction of the price of an actual in-person treatment.


HB: DIY facials can be so luxurious – with the right recipes. Can you share an at-home recipe for a DIY facial? 

While do-it-yourself skincare can only go so far when serious skin concerns are involved, it is fabulous when it comes to masks. DIY masks are easy to make and fairly inexpensive.

Here is one of my favorite recipes, suitable for all skin types:
Mix one teaspoon of full fat Greek yogurt (or coconut yogurt for vegan option) with one teaspoon of honey. For dry skin, add a slice of avocado and blend or a few drops of avocado oil. For acneic skin types, add a bit of powdered charcoal. Massage into clean skin and leave it for 15-20 minutes. For best results, relax in the bath or in a steamy shower for 5-10 minutes before rinsing it off. This mask is rich in probiotics, which are very helpful with skin balancing and congestion. The honey is a natural humectant – it attracts water from the air to your skin.


HB: Many of us have kids who will be home this fall, any tips on incorporating kids in an at-home spa day?

OL: For kid-friendly skincare, keep it simple. I see many irritations with kids’ skin due to parents allowing them to experiment with random products. Gentle cleanser and mild hydrating lotion are all the little ones need. Real skincare starts fairly early for teens – from 11 years on, a skincare routine needs to include treatments for specific skin conditions. In the meantime, have fun with your kids. Draw a big bubble bath, make a DIY mask, put on some music and relax. It’s important to teach our kids early to take care of their skin. They also get the added benefit of learning to relax, which will help them deal better with uncertainty of the school year ahead.


HB: MASKS ARE AN ESSENTIAL ASPECT OF THE NEW NORMAL. HOW CAN THE MASK-WEAR EXPERIENCE BE THE MOST PLEASANT FOR OUR FACES?
First and foremost, keep your facial masks perfectly clean. If you are wearing disposable masks, change them daily. If you are wearing a fabric mask, wash them after each use. Also, avoid masks made from synthetic fabrics and opt for natural fibers like soft cotton, bamboo, or silk. Keep your makeup at a minimum – I am mostly referring to foundations and powders. Keep your skin as clean as possible. If you are out in humid weather, make it a habit to wipe your face a few times per day with Facialettes, or a similar wipe/toner.
