Nourished, From Head to Toe
A Skincare Routine for Your Body
The weather has cooled, and many have updated their skincare routines to include extra moisturizers and serums for their face. Yet, body care tends to remain static with an extra layer of lotion if you’re feeling particularly fancy. Sure, our face is vulnerable to loads of pollution and free radicals that can accelerate the signs of aging, but that doesn’t mean our body is impenetrable as well. Besides, I think it is safe to say we’re all missing spa treatments by this stage of 2020. We’ve compiled a straightforward approach to skincare for your whole body – let’s get into it.
When it comes to developing a body care routine, much of the same goals remain as face care: effective cleansing, gentle exfoliation, and nourishing moisturizer to improve skin texture and appearance — giving a youthful glow from head-to-toe.
Similarly, ingredients reign king. Avoid parabens and opt for natural, organic ingredients. While you may avoid coconut oil on your face, your body can drink up the moisturizing goodness sans breakout. That being said, if you’re prone to body breakouts, opt for non-comedogenic moisturizers.
When choosing a cleanser, avoid alcohol, perfumes, dyes, and astringent soaps like sodium lauryl sulfate and opt for gentler ingredients like sodium lauroyl isethionate. Body cleansers can do a bit of double duty, meaning they should be cleansing and moisturizing. Shea butter, ceramides, and plant oils like argan, safflower, avocado, and olive help nourish your skin while avoiding that dry, squeaky clean feeling. One Love Organics’ Easy Does It cleanser has vegetable glycerin to help the skin retain moisture while Chilean soap bark cleanses the skin.
Exfoliation is where things get pretty impressive. Though I think we can agree that a lovely, finely milled body scrub can be a heavenly experience, AHAs and BHAs have a place in your shower shelf, too. You can expect your skin to glow and, if body acne happens to be a concern for you, breakouts can decrease. If you love the feel of a light scrub on your skin, Nécessaire has a body wash that may be perfect for you. It is a gentle formula with both chemical and physical exfoliation. An AHA/BHA trio (Glycolic, Lactic, and Salicylic acids) helps your skin glow while charcoal and pumice smooth the skin’s texture without irritation. If you are using a product with chemical exfoliants on your body, be sure to use SPF – the same rules apply for your face!
Body serums are a fun and unexpected level of care within the whole routine. Just as you apply a serum to your face for a nourishing treatment, your body needs the same TLC. One Love Organics’ Vitamin C oil is full of all the glow benefits we love for our faces.
Finally, moisturizing is what comes last. You can opt for a traditional body lotion-consistency or a more decadent cream full of natural ingredients. Another alternative is to use a body oil — Rowsie Vain has a gorgeous line of nourishing oils for the hair, face, and body. For an authentic spa experience, a body lotion like True Botanicals’ Body Lotion followed by a thin layer of body oil will have you glowing from head to toe, day in and day out.
Full body skincare isn’t a moment of luxury reserved for the spa or a special occasion – it is a moment of self-care that can happen every damn day
