Celebrating Storm on X-Men’s 20th Anniversary

Storm’s 20th

It has been 20 years since the first X-Men movie was released! No one screams inner-warrior more to us than Storm, so we talked with Halle a bit about the strength of her character in the role.

1. How did your training for Storm compare with your training for other action characters? What kind of combat training was required?

Films like Bruised and John Wick required “traditional,” rigorous stunt and MMA training. What was crazy about X-Men was our strength needed to look super-human, so we used wire-work enhanced action sequences, aka our stunt work was often suspended mid air by a series of wires. It’s a lot harder than you think! Storm’s special mutation is the ability to control the weather, and her eyes would turn white – for the first movie, I had to wear the most uncomfortable white contacts, but thankfully her eyes were updated with special effects moving forward!

2. Storm had her own evolution over the course of the X-Men movies – why was it important to you to showcase her strength?

Storm was the first female super hero of African Descent, raised in both Harlem and Egypt. Being a black character, it was important to me to not only bring strength and power to Storm, but to demonstrate how she could lead with grace and a sense of quiet confidence. A lot of people used to tell me that Storm needed to be stronger in the first film, and as the films progressed I advocated more and more for Storm to truly lead and fight like the bad ass that she always was.

I connected most to Storm’s earth mother quality

3. What connected you to the character, and how did it re-spin your approach to your everyday life?

Honestly, I connected most to Storm’s earth mother quality.  Not only does she lovingly teach and care for the mutant children at Xavier’s school, but was she was the most nurturing member of the team. All the X-Men looked to Storm for comfort as she was always the calm in the “storm”.

4. What is one thing about the X-Men movies that nobody else knows about?

Well two things, actually…

#1 – The first day we had our suits on for the first time, we had to all jump over a small 2 feet wall and one by one we immediately fell down like weebles . Our leather suits were too tight for our legs as they had not been broken in yet and we realized we couldn’t bend our legs!  It was one of the funniest moments of our entire time together.

#2 – In one of the deleted scenes from X-Men: Days of Future Past, Wolverine and Storm actually kiss! I was so excited because I was always asking – Why is no one checkin for Storm? When’s Storm gonna get a lil Sum sum?!
